What exactly is poker software?

A number of companies have developed programs that will help you to improve your online poker game.

There are a variety of different programs that help you in different ways, ranging from software that will track your progress to help you find leaks to others that will help you make the best decisions at the table whilst you play.

Is poker software legal?

The vast majority of poker software is legal (all of the popular ones I know of are anyway). All of the software recommendations on this site are perfectly legal, so you should have no worries about getting into trouble if you use them.

Is it fair to use poker software?

Poker software doesn't do anything extraordinary to help you win money. Each program simply uses the information that is freely available at the tables to help you improve your game.

You could do this by working things out in your head or by recording data by hand - the software just makes this easier by doing the leg work for you.

It is fair to say that players who do not use programs such as PokerTracker are at a disadvantage to those that do, however, this software is available to anyone that wants to buy it and use it. I am very comfortable with using PokerTracker to help me improve my game and I do not see it as being unfair in any way.

Can I use poker software at any online poker room?

Most poker software tends to work with all of the big name poker rooms. The software may not be able to work with smaller networks or rooms due to compatibility issues, but if you stick to the most popular rooms you should be fine.

Programs that work off a central database of player information (such as PokerEdge) are often banned by major online poker rooms (see PokerStars prohibited software list for example). However, none of the other software listed on this page works in this way and so the poker rooms are more than happy for players to use them.

Which poker software should I use?

There are two main types of software:

Tracking software that tracks your every play and provides stats for you to work with.
In game odds calculators that help you make the best decisions based on the odds.

Tracking software like PokerTracker is essential for any regular online player, so it would be fitting for beginner, intermediate and most definitely advanced players.

In-game odds calculators like Texas Calculatem help you to make strong basic decisions, but they will only be helpful at the lower stakes games. This software is going to be most useful for beginner players.

Poker tracking software.

Poker tracking software is highly recommended for regular players who want to be able to plug leaks in their game. If you do not use this software, you are putting yourself at a disadvantage at the table - it's a simple as that.

This software will record every play you are your opponents make and display the data back to you in useful tables and graphs, highlighting key statistics about your game. The top 3 poker tracking programs are:

Which tracking software is best?

Poker Tracker, closely followed by Holdem Manager.

The current top two tracking programs are Poker Tracker (PT3) and Holdem Manager (HEM). PokerOffice does a good job and used to be one of my favourites, but has been surpassed by the greater number of features and usability of the other two pieces of software (plus the price is too steep as well).

My personal favourite is Poker Tracker 3. They are both on par is terms of features and usability, so you can't go wrong with either. However, Poker Tracker has a much more polished interface, and it runs a little faster than HEM from my experience. PT3 also has a Mac version too, which is immensely useful.

So it's an incredibly close call, but I slightly prefer PT3. If you've already got a copy of HEM it's probably not worth switching, but if you've got the time it would be fun to check out PT3 to see what I mean about the sleeker design.

Overall, I would rate each piece of software as follows:

PokerTracker 3 - 9.5/10
HoldemManager -9/10
PokerOffice - 5.5/10

I would recommend that you give both PT3 and HEM a try with their free trials and see which one you prefer. You definitely need to be using software like this if you are a regular player, and fortunately you can't go wrong with either of them. Use the one you enjoy using the most and feel comfortable with.

Note: It's worth taking a look at which poker sites are supported by software like Poker Tracker. The majority are fine, but not all of them are fully compatible (with some being only partially compatible).

Other poker software.

PokerStove - A free equity calculator (immensely handy).
AutoHotKey (AHK) - A free open-source program that allows you to tweak poker rooms.

PokerStove.

I rave about the little PokerStove program all the time. It is basically like an offline odds calculator that will calculate your equity in a hand based on your cards and your opponents cards (or range). Every player should use this tool.

AutoHotKey (windows only).

This program allows you to automate stuff and create hotkey shortcuts. It wasn't designed specifically for online poker players, but the durability of the program means that it works very well with online poker clients and can really help you to improve your overall playing experience. It comes in most useful for multi-tabling.

Using AutoHotKey you can do handy things like:

Automatically rebuy for the maximum at cash tables when your stack drops below the max.
Use keyboard shortcuts to play or a gamepad controller.
Automatically click on the 'time bank' when you are running out of time.
Lots of other handy stuff.

You can find a list of all these scripts at this AHK poker scripts page. Some are a little outdated, but there are still a number of gems there if you browse around. Highlights of AHK scripts include:

Full Tilt shortcuts - (you have to pay $30 for this one).

All you have to do to get these scripts working is download AutoHotKey and load up the scripts. It really is very straightforward. It is also possible to create your own scripts, but it will take a bit of time to learn how to code them properly and get them working.

Table Ninja.

Table Ninja is a very good script/program for PokerStars that gives you a lot of control over bet sizing and loads of other stuff. It works in the same way as the AHK scripts, but it doesn't require the use of AutoHotKey as it runs by itself. This one costs $25, but it is a very useful script that can really help speed up the time it takes for you to bet.

Whenever you play poker, it is always important to try and be aware of your opponents' actions, and what their particular style of play may be. Especially so in the game of Texas Holdem, it is vital that you are able to play your opponent and not just your own cards.

Therefore you should always try and take into account how your opponent plays to help influence every decision you make to help you choose the most profitable action possible. A simple yet effective way of remembering an opponent’s style of play for key moments is taking notes on them from past experiences at the table.

Advantages of taking player notes.

Most online poker rooms will offer you the feature of being able to assign notes to individual players at the table. Some rooms will even allow you to tag players with different symbols or colours to help identify them from other players at the table.

The Full-Tilt Poker room has a particularly good player notes feature, as it offers you the ability to tag a colour to your opponents as well as take notes. This particular feature is incredibly useful, and to be honest I don’t think I could see myself playing at any room that did not have the note-taking option available.

By taking notes on your opponents you can quickly find out information on players who you have played against before, but have since forgotten from the last time you were at the table with them. I do believe that it is important to try and keep your notes on your opponents as simple as possible, and to be frank, I don’t want to bring up the note box and have to decipher lines of code every time I want to find out some basic info on the other players at the table.

Keep your player notes simple and understandable. There's no need to write in a cryptic code.

So even though I want to be fully briefed on my opponents, I want to keep the notes simple and straightforward. But what exactly should you be taking notes of on your opponents?

Key poker player notes.

Style of play.

I feel a good place to start off is to try and determine what my opponent’s particular style of play is. I want to try and find out whether or not they are:

Tight-Aggressive.
Tight-Passive.
Loose-Aggressive.
or Loose-Passive.

This can be done by watching they way they play their hands. This is because this information can be very important for where you might be forced into a difficult call or fold situation.

For example, if I have a decent hand and I am facing a large bet from my opponent, I am more likely to call if I know my opponent is Loose-Aggressive rather than Tight-Aggressive. Therefore I will usually shorten these tags down to TA, TP, LA and LP and stick them at the top of the note box for quick reference when I want some info on my opponents.

Other key information.

After taking note of a particular player’s style of play, I want to make a few little key notes on other aspects of their game. Below is a list of a few of the most important things I am looking for when watching my opponents play:

Do they pay too much for draws?
Do they bet draws?
Do they make continuation bets?
Do they make float plays?
Do they over-value top pair?
Are they a calling station?

These in my opinion are the most important and profitable factors of my opponent’s game that I want to be aware of. There are going to be numerous tidbits that I can pick up on and note down, but the 5 points above are the ones that are going to help me the most. This is because knowing these points will help me in a multitude of common situations in the game.

For example, if I know my opponent over-values top pair, I am going to bet like crazy when I am holding a monster rather than try and slow play and sucker them in. Furthermore, If I know my opponent pays too much with drawing hands, I am going to bet big when they are drawing to make them pay dearly and help them make bigger and bigger mistakes by calling.

Player notes example.

As you can see, the notes are simple and effective, as they allow me to quickly see what my opponent is like without having to try and figure out different short-handed codes I have for each player. I don’t often use the coloured tags for my opponents if they are available, as I feel that the majority of key info will be kept within my notes. However, I will sometimes use 2 colours like green and red to help signify a very weak player and a very strong player.

Use the colour tags to your advantage, but don't feel obliged to have to use all the different colours available. Keep it simple.

Taking player notes evaluation.

The style of note taking as described above is the one that works best for me, so you may find that an alternative method may work better for you. However, I like to think that the above method is a good foundation for note taking and should help you take down key info on your opponents if you are new to using the note-taking feature.

But you should remember that notes should build up from a few hours of play with your opponents, as it is not easy to build up an accurate picture from a mere few minutes or hands at the table. However, when you do take player notes, just stick with something simple and easy to understand.
